Blond, petite, Canadian client, Elle, is in her mid 40’s. She travels with her husband on business. She approached me to help her with her style. She expressed a need for outfits for lunches, country club, and client dinners. But she is so fricken cool, cooler than you would think of someone who would be at the country club.
She was more of a boyfriend jean and jean jacket kind of a girl. But here she was swimming with the big fish in business and not feeling like her look was cutting it. We did a closet review via Skype and she made a Pinterest board of all her favorite looks. Most of them were ripped boyfriend jeans, white tops, paired with a cool downtown jackets.
We defined her best colors, cuts, and shapes and dove deep into her wardrobe needs. And then I had a light bulb flash of what the root of her problem was. She had a closet full of basics that were way too casual for her life. She was stuck in dressed down and gravitated towards downtown look appropriate for a 20 year old.
She had what I call ‘style distortion’. A disconnect between what she needed to wear, what she wanted to wear, and what is appropriate for her age and lifestyle. Also her style personality was hidden behind the basic long sleeve soft t-shirts.
Some of us don’t want to grow up. She did however have a great body which she kept in tip top shape but she
was not showing it off. Luckily I was able to lovingly explain this disconnect that I was seeing and she was able to make progress by purchasing some new outfits which she liked and that would work for these more dressed up occasions.
I was also able to get her on board with elevating her casual wear pieces to fitted cotton tops with more detail and ruching to take her casual looks up a notch.
Success+progress sometimes is more subtle than expected.
