The Real Cost of a Designer Bag

Louis Vuitton Neverfull PM

Recently I met up with my bestie for mani/pedis and I noticed she had a new bag. “Where is your Neverfull Louis Vuitton?” I asked.

She replied “I had to throw it out after carrying it for 7 years. It was growing legs!”

It’s funny I always thought of Louis Vuitton and designer bags as an indulgence but I did the math and  the CPW (cost per wear) came out to 39 cents a day!

So although I may not always condone designer purchases for items that you rarely wear

I often think it’s a good idea to invest in quality items when you know you are going to really use and love it to death.  But quality is the KEY word here.  Some designer labels are not selling superior goods but rather overpriced items where you are paying for their advertising and marketing budget.

Understand a Neverfull Louis Vuitton bag isn’t a leather bag but merely a canvas bag with their signature logo and leather straps.  But in this case it was a lightweight good day bag perfect for my bestie.

I also like to encourage my clients in NYC to allocate more dollars for those items most needed and worn. For example, in NYC your coat is like your car… the very first thing people see when they meet you for most months out of the year or that signature bag you carry to and from work every day,  your favorite pair of jeans that get worn to death and your go to black pumps that make the perfect statement.

You get it…

So what brands do I think are creating quality products that last?

  • Nanette Lepore (also keeping manufacturing here in NYC so that’s a good thing)
  • Cole Haan
  • Elie Tahari

are just a few of my favorites.

If you believe in quality not quantity then you will love my next book Vetted by a Stylist.
