Free Clothing Donation Pickup in NYC

By | June 17th, 2014 | Confessions, NYC

Donation Pickup in NYCI have a confession. After my big and long purge this Spring it has taken me awhile to get everything out of my apartment.  I sorted everything~donate, sell at Beacons, sell at Sta, give to cousin, give to friend’s daughter, give to makeup artist friend, and tailor. But it takes me longer to implement my plan. And I feel a tiny bit of shame about that (I’m human).

And what I didn’t plan for was the rejection of some items at two of the selling resources. Now what to do with Designer goods which were worth something? At the end of the day I need to get this stuff out of my life and move on. Life is too short to be spending time peddling stuff I no longer want.

Up until now, Veterans of America were on my speed-dial for “easy button” clothing donation directly from my apartment in New York City. But two weeks ago when I called them, they told me that they no longer pick up from my neighborhood in Manhattan. My zip code is 10018 — I’m in the center of the city!

I even told them that I promoted their service on my blog to my readers. They didn’t seem to care however, and they gave no explanation except perhaps hinting that they weren’t getting enough donations from my area.

This seems impossible, because if you live in the heart of New York City near Herald Square, you’re not only less likely to own a car, you’re also not going to want to schlep your donations 20 blocks away. Plus, we’re busy people!

After some Googling, and another phone call, I discovered that City Opera Thrift Shop would be grateful (and honored) to schedule a pickup at my residence. The date was two weeks away, but I figured it would give me time to add more to the mix.

They couldn’t have been nicer on the phone, and a day before the pickup they sent me a reminder email. They even picked up on time, and left me the donation sheet for tax purposes.

Easy-peasy.

So, it looks like my new donation resource has been found! How can you make it easy for you to donate what you’re not wearing?
