Love What You Wear shows women how to be fabulous wherever you are in the world.

There was sipping, shopping, a style presentation and plenty of book signing.

It was very important to me to showcase real women as real models because I believe great style is possible at ANY size or shape.

Thank you all to came out to this lovely and intimate gathering of clients and friend to celebrate the launch of my latest book.

A wonderful time was had by all.

Last week I worked with an out of town executive client who needed just one special thing. The perfect dress as a west coast wedding guest.
She didn’t want a LBD as she had several at home for work and she wanted something for an afternoon wedding with a night time reception which would be fun to dance in. Style wise she asked for ‘euro chic’ from this great book by Lucky.

I added several other criteria into the mix for example-flattering color on her, shape that would balance her figure, travel friendly (wouldn’t wrinkle too much), ability to wear again to another occasion, age appropriate, and under $400. Timing wise I knew the stores would be pretty stocked with new arrivals of spring dresses but the budget would be tight since sales were ended.

I set forth and pulled a racks worth of dresses at Lord &Taylor but didn’t really feel satisfied. There were some decent dresses but nothing that really knocked my socks off and felt were right for my client. So I hit BCBG and pulled 3 dresses there but felt they may be a little too young. That night I felt that my work was not yet done so I called into Saks last minute and headed up there. While I was pulling at Saks my client was at my private bra fitter getting the star treatment and bras that fit perfectly. Yvonne helped me in the dress department and I felt like I really hit the jackpot.

Most of the dresses in her price range looked more expensive and the variety was so robust I pulled 27 dresses. Colors were rich and I knew were in her palette. She arrived to an exploding dressing room and we got to work. She then also clarified a few points which she hadn’t mentioned before so off the bat we could eliminate a few.

In the end it came down 3 major contenders. A green Laundry dress with chain collar, a red one shoulder Badgley Mischka goddess cocktail, and a bronze draped dress also by Badgley Mischka . What was exciting to me was to hear my client say, “who knew I was such a Badgley Mischka fan” as several of his dresses were major contenders. I love it when my clients are introduced to new lines or their style view is expanded. A gratifying experience and the proof is in the pictures and the fact that she decided to wear the stunning red dress in honor of Valentine’s Day to dinner.

I also got the chance to visit Anna Ruth Henriques who graciously invited me to the fair free of charge via my good friend Louis Morin Jr. Showing amazing hand painted jewelry I was blown away by the crafts-woman-ship and usage of my one of my favorite stones Labdorite.  Her prices very fair starting at $45 and up.

Next I tried on several handmade hats with feathers and embellishments by Ome which is right here in NYC on Elizabeth street. She also makes creative out of the box headbands but it was the business card with a feather sticking out the top which really impressed me. One to follow for sure.

Stephanie Jones Rubiano was showing her mixed media small works which caught my eye. One of her pieces she told me was an original photo of her grandmother and was not for sale.  I found the ‘tweet’ piece charming and totally socially of the moment.

I’ve been looking for neck warmers for a talented private client of mine and I stumbled upon this one which is olive and has fantastic buttons. Their whole display of hand knits were wearable yet unique due to the buttons and extra touches.  Check out Maggadora Mystery design.

With a line outside to make you cry even my press status got me very little VIP service

Composed of over 400 couture ensembles shown at this exhibit it was easy to spend over 2 hours trying to drink it all in. Le Petit Palais is such a grand space and they did an excellent job showing the magnitude and depth of Yves Saint Laurent’s work from the 60’s to his last collection in 2002.  As the venue had an issue with me lacking a ‘real press pass’- (I’ve been press since 1999 but never really had an official looking card) I was afraid to take pictures since they had been so strict about letting me in. Finally after explaining that I had come from New York to cover the show and that is was my birthday one of the museum gestapo took pity on me and granted me access. Once inside I realized why the line was so long. The show is amazing and impossible to see in 15 minutes. Like a kid in a candy store I desperately wanted to shoot away but had to be super sly about it. I managed to capture a few of my top picks. The last room ‘collision of colors’ was a fabulous peak into his great mind and showed his true adoration of bright colors. The walls were floor to ceiling color fabric swatches attached to 8×10 papers. Mirrors above multiplied the effect and the colors were divided by reds, yellows, blues, purples, and on. Sadly this small room was guarded closely and I unable to capture it.

I realized while taking it all in that YSL was so spot on to each decade’s trend. Here were the capes, the harem pants, and the homage to fine artists, the over the top embroideries, le smoking, poufy sleeves, the trapeze shape, the decadent gowns, the collaboration with celebrities and socialites, and the tailored woman in a power suit.

Displaying the looks more simply than previous shows at the Costume Institute who tends to have a lot of smoke and mirror effects, this exhibition showed the collections on simple white mannequins some with matching jewelry. I found myself drawn to the room, ‘the last ball’ which had gowns galore and a massive black wall of ‘le smoking’. The dynasty-esque 80’s vibe was super strong. Run don’t walk. This closes August 29^th. Rumor has it that USA could be the show’s next stop.
