Las Fabulosas: flattering and warm dresses

A reader of Las Fabulosas recently asked the above style question – and the site’s editor turned to me for help! Read my answer and advice below:

For the holiday parties, “I would do a fun, festive color in a deep, dark shade such as eggplant, dark burgundy, navy or dark green,” says New York City–based fashion stylist Alexandra Suzanne. “These are all very slimming colors.”

Alexandra suggests wearing an A-line dress with fluted or puffed sleeves, which will make your waist look smaller. Also, deep V- or U-necks are flattering, but make sure there is no ruching in the bustline, as it will draw more attention to larger breasts. Look for a dress in which the fabric is not too thin or too tight, but not too loose, either. A dress with an empire waist is another good choice for you. Some details, like a lace trim at the hem of the A-line, will also be flattering for this shape.

Avoid sheath dresses, square necklines and sleeveless dresses. The length of the dress or skirt should hit right at the knee; any longer and it may look frumpy, says Alexandra. Choose a peep-toe heel in the same color as the dress for an elongating effect.
